As the ship begins its final glide back to port, there’s always a quiet shift in the air. Suitcases reappear in hallways, schedules slow down, and conversations turn from what’s next to what just was.

This cruise — aboard the beautiful MS Nieuw Statendam –  felt like one of those journeys that wasn’t about any single highlight, but rather the rhythm of it all.

Sea days settled into a comforting routine. 

Morning Mass for Nana. Coffee for me, hot water for her. Time spent working on trains, reading, or simply watching the endless horizon. Afternoons filled with duplicate bridge and winning, learning something new in a class, or just wandering the ship with no real destination.

There’s a simplicity at sea that’s hard to recreate anywhere else — a reminder that not every hour needs to be scheduled to be meaningful.

Evenings brought something different every day.

Dinner with new friends — people who were strangers at the start of the cruise but quickly became part of the experience. Conversations that stretched longer than expected. Stories exchanged across tables. Laughter that felt easy and unforced.

After dinner, maybe a show, maybe music, maybe just time spent talking with people we had met along the way.

It’s one of the quiet gifts of cruising — connection without effort.

From scenic countryside rides to historic cities and peaceful coastal towns, each stop offered its own story.

But more than the landmarks, it’s the feeling of those places that lingers —

walking through centuries of history, sitting down for a simple lunch, or just taking in a view that doesn’t need explaining. Also sharing our adventures with our cruising friends is very special for us.

• Nana taking time to pray for her grandchildren

• A swim, a walk, or time in the hot tub after the exercise room
