Transatlantic Cruise – Thursday May 2 (Santiago)

Today we arrived at Northern Spain. Our excursion today took us to Santiago de Compostela. This translates to “James field of stars”. This is where the tomb of St. James, the apostle is buried.  The cathedral here was built on the tomb of St. James. We arrived here from Gibraltor and previously the Canary Islands, heading to our final stop in Rotterdam Netherlands. A long trip up the coasts but very nice.

Some pilgrims were here today, some have walked here from as far as Germany and Sweden. The tradition is to walk from your home. The trail is called El Comino and is very famous. There are several different parts of the trails but all the trails lead to  Santiago de Compostela.

The bus ride was about an hour from the port where we docked.  We walked around several squares all built almost 1,000 years ago. The cathedral was fabulous. Nana was able to find a priest to hear her confession and she was very happy.

A local hotel had a reception for us. Typical Spanish tapas and some local wine along with some local musicians and Nana did some dancing.

Nana befriended an older couple that were married out of school, then after 25 years got divorced, both remarried and their spouses passed away, met each other again and got married again.

At Sunday Mass our priest’s sermon was about meeting people and how it was God’s hand that makes this happen. During your meeting either you get impacted or you impact them. You have to look for the connection and sometimes work to make it happen. Nana calls this listening to the Holy Spirit.  We have seen this happen a lot on our cruise. It happened again with this older couple that we met during our excursion.
