Great Lakes Cruise Aug 10 (Killarney Canada)

How can you go wrong with a name like KIillarney. Killarney was relatively isolated for much of its history. The village was accessible only by water until 1962, when Highway 637 was built, connecting Killarney to the Trans-Canada Highway. This road construction marked a significant change in the village’s history, as it opened up Killarney to tourism and easier access for goods and services. In the 20th century, Killarney’s isolation and natural beauty became assets, as the area developed into a popular destination for tourists. The establishment of Killarney Provincial Park in 1964 further boosted the area’s appeal. The park is renowned for its stunning landscapes, including the rugged La Cloche Mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and dense forests.

Today we took a zodiac ride around the waters surrounding Killarney. We were on the 11am zodiac and everything looked good. We boarded the boat with only 6 people (it can handle 10) and off we went. The water was a little choppy and we were definitely getting wet from the spray. After we entered our second cove it started raining hard and we looked over at the ship and there was a big squall. Our guide got on the radio and they told all zodiacs to stop and shelter where they were. We hung out in our cove braving the rain and wind as best we could. After a little while the squall passed the ship and we were told that we needed to cut short our excursion and come directly back to the ship. Again a choppy ride back but everyone was safe but definitely wet and cold.

After we changed clothes, we headed down to the tender to goto the town of Killarney for a fish fry at the local hotel. As we got off the tender it was pouring rain again and after a short walk we were at the fish fry. What a great hotel. Very majestic with log construction. We had a fantastic singer for our lunch and they served us some great food along with beer and wine. We were even entertained with Gordon Lightfoot’s train triliolgy as well as the Edmund Fitzgerald song.

Back on the ship and Nana is taking a nap, then steak and lobster tonight with our ND friends.
