Dorset by Steam: Castles, Countryside, and a Step Back in Time
Our day began with an immigration check on board the ship. The UK is getting stricter with visas required and a face to face visit. Then we departed at 11:00 AM, heading into one of the most charming corners of Englandβthe Dorset countryside. This was one of those excursions that promised not just sights, but a feelingβ¦ a step back into another era.
A Drive Through Classic England
The journey east unfolded like a postcard. Rolling green hills, stone fences, and quiet farmland stretched in every direction. It felt like the England you imagine before you ever visitβthe kind you see in movies and storybooks.
Soon we arrived in the village of Corfe, and it was everything youβd hope for.
Corfe: A Village Frozen in Time
Corfe is the definition of a picture-perfect English village. Honey-colored stone cottages lined narrow streets, and at the center of it all stood the dramatic ruins of Corfe Castle.
The castle itself tells a story that spans over a thousand years. Once a royal fortress guarding the route through the Purbeck Hills, it was ultimately destroyed during the English Civil War after a fierce siege. Today, its broken towers rise proudly above the villageβa reminder of both strength and history.

We wandered through the village, taking photos, soaking in the quiet charm, and imagining what life must have been like here centuries ago.
A Ride Back in Time
From Corfe, the experience shifted from historic to nostalgic as we boarded a beautifully restored steam train.

Built in the late 1800s, this railway still runs much as it did over a century ago. The gentle chug of the engine, the whistle echoing across the countryside, and the slow, scenic pace made it feel like time had paused.
As we rolled through the Purbeck countryside, fields and hills drifted byβsimple, peaceful, and timeless.
Swanage: A Seaside Classic
The train delivered us to Swanage, a classic Victorian seaside town set on a beautiful bay.
The promenade invited an easy walk along the water, with the sea breeze and soft sound of waves creating a relaxed coastal rhythm. The pier stretched out into the bay, offering views back toward the town and surrounding cliffs.

We wandered into the Old Town, browsing small shops and picking up a few souvenirsβsimple moments that always seem to become the most memorable. We even got our favorite British mealβ¦. fish and chips.
Why This Day Stood Out
This excursion blended three experiences into one perfect day:
β’ A peaceful drive through classic English countryside
β’ A story-rich stop in a historic village with a dramatic castle
