Benoa (Denpasar), Bali, Indonesia-2/26/25

Today we stop in Bali.  Bali was originally inhabited by Austronesian people around 2000 BC, who migrated from Taiwan and brought their agricultural skills. The Dutch began colonizing Indonesia in the 16th century but only gained control over Bali in the early 20th century.  Despite colonization, the Dutch allowed Bali to maintain much of its cultural identity. Japan occupied Bali during World War II (1942–1945).  After the war, Bali became part of Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch rule. In 1949, Indonesia gained full independence, and Bali became a province of the new republic. In the 1960s, tourism started growing, and Bali became a global travel destination. In 1963, Mount Agung erupted, causing devastation but also reinforcing the Balinese belief in spiritual cycles. The Bali Bombings (2002, 2005) shook the island, but Bali rebounded with stronger security and a continued focus on tourism. Today, Bali is a blend of tradition and modernity, with a thriving tourism industry, vibrant arts, and deep spiritual culture.

Our excursion today took us to some very interesting destinations. First as we got off the ship we were greeted by a band and Nana made some new friends.

First stop on the excursion was a wood carving shop. The village of Mas, where skilled carvers turned slabs of teak and ebony into many different forms and decorations. Some gorgeous carvings !

The Mary cost is $3,965

The staue costs $8,540

Next stop was the Barang dance. The Barong Dance, which is a traditional dance depicting the timeless theme of good versus evil. In the background, gongs and percussion instruments provided a musical accompaniment to create a wonderful play.

Then we had lunch. We were in Kintamani — a beautiful place for lunch overlooking the slopes of Mt Batur. We enjoyed stunning views of the volcano and the lake in the distance.

Then we visited a water temple, where we learned much about the Hindu religion. 90% of Indonesia is Hindu. Tirta Empul— the temple of holy springs. This 1,000-year-old temple complex is built around a sacred spring, and Balinese journey from around the island to bathe in its protective waters.

Last stop was the Ubud colony, famous for its painters’ and artists’ studios, galleries and museum. We visited one of the painting galleries and saw fantastic paintings.

A long day and we were glad to back on the ship.  Two sea days coming up then we stop in Singapore !
