In the Wake of the Vikings 2026 – Chasing the Eclipse at Sea

The Countdown

For two weeks before it arrived, the eclipse was all anyone could talk about. The captain gave several talks laying out his strategy for finding the best possible viewing spot — how he’d read the weather models, lean on support from the home office, and use every bit of the roughly 150-mile window he had to work with. His best estimate: somewhere between 3:00 and 7:00 p.m. Iceland time, we would stand in the shadow of the moon.

At nearly every port in Iceland, our local guides talked about the wave of visitors already pouring in. We passed tent cities pitched and waiting along the coast, empty for now but ready to fill with eclipse chasers. Among our fellow travelers, it became the constant table talk — where to stand, what the weather might do, and exactly what hour the sky would go dark.

Getting Ready to Watch

At dinner one night, talk turned to phones and cameras, and how to keep from ruining either one. Even my brand-new iPhone 17B Pro needed a solar filter over its lens — without one, pointing it at the sun during the eclipse could permanently damage the camera. I improvised, cutting down one of our spare pairs of eclipse glasses to fashion makeshift filters for both my phone and our 360 camera. It wasn’t elegant, but we hoped it would hold up when it mattered.

A Record Fleet, A Rare Sky

Today’s total solar eclipse — August 12, 2026 — drew an extraordinary crowd to Icelandic waters. At least 31 cruise ships carrying more than 50,000 passengers converged around Iceland for the event, a record for the country. Part of what made it so rare: Reykjavík itself was experiencing its first total solar eclipse since 1433. Six centuries of Icelanders had lived and died without ever seeing the sun go dark at midday — and we happened to be floating just offshore for the one that finally came.

Overcast and Uncertain

The morning of the eclipse dawned heavy and gray, with rain showers moving through. Nana and Papa said a special prayer to as God to help the captain find blue sky’s.

The captain spent the morning chasing gaps in the cloud cover, and the forecast wasn’t encouraging. he put the odds at 75% that we’d be on the starboard side but wasn’t optimistic about blue skies. As such we planned a party in our room hosting our table mates for a little eclipse-viewing party, glasses and cameras at the ready, hoping for the best.

The Chase

When the eclipse began, the sky was still solid clouds. Then the ship banked into a sharp U-turn. We later learned it was a gut call from the captain — he’d spotted what he believed was a patch of open sky and decided to run for it.

Totality itself was expected to last 2 minutes and 18 seconds for us — remarkably, the maximum duration anywhere along the entire path, found in the open ocean just off Iceland’s Látrabjarg cliffs, exactly where our ship was working to position itself. On land, the shadow was racing across Iceland at roughly 2,100 miles an hour, first touching the Westfjords at Straumnes Lighthouse before sweeping south over the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Reykjavík, and the Reykjanes Peninsula and out to sea.

An eclipse like this unfolds in stages. First contact is the moment the moon first nicks the edge of the sun — invisible to the naked eye, but the countdown has begun. Over the next hour, the moon creeps steadily across the sun’s face, the light dimming and the air cooling in a way that feels less like dusk and more like the world quietly holding its breath. In the final seconds before totality, sunlight filtering through the moon’s mountains and valleys breaks into “Baily’s beads” — bright points scattered along the rim — before collapsing into a single brilliant flash called the diamond ring. Then, for those precious minutes of totality, the sun’s pale corona blazes out around a perfectly black disk, day turns briefly to twilight, and the whole sequence reverses on its way back to daylight.

The Impossible Moment

About twenty minutes in, we spotted a break in the clouds — but it was at the back of the ship. We rushed outside along with what felt like everyone else aboard, jockeying for position. In snatches and glimpses, the clouds kept parting, and then, finally, they gave way completely. We watched the eclipse in its entirety. The captain had delivered the impossible.

Looking Up, and Back

Standing there in that strange midday twilight, it was hard not to think about how long humans have looked up in wonder — and fear — at exactly this sight. In 585 B.C., a solar eclipse is said to have stopped a battle in its tracks: the Lydians and Medes had been at war for years along the River Halys when the sky suddenly went dark mid-fight, and both sides took it as a sign from the gods to lay down their weapons and make peace. Centuries later, in 1919, scientists observing a total eclipse off the coast of West Africa used the darkened sky to measure how starlight bent around the sun’s mass — confirming Einstein’s theory of general relativity and turning a patent clerk into a household name almost overnight.

Whatever the era, the effect seems to be the same: the sky goes dark, and people stop what they’re doing to pay attention.

Once in a Lifetime

It was, without question, a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Nana and I stood on deck together, marveling — not just at the astronomy of it, but at the awesome power of God and the quiet, precise way He works, even in something as vast and ancient as the turning of sun, moon, and earth.
